In an important review of experimental studies published in 2005, David Farrington and Brandon Welsh laid out in simple detail why randomized experiments should be prioritised in evaluation studies in criminology. They pointed to its fundamental advantage in controlling for confounding causes in trying to isolate the impacts of treatments or interventions:
